Probably one of the most recognizable landmarks in Venice, the Grand Canal is one of the largest canals in Italy, but that doesn't mean you can't see it in the most efficient way. However, one of the biggest misconceptions is that gondolas are cheap and easy to get. In fact, the price for one gondola is €90, which may seem fine with some, but extremely pricy for others, like me. There is a solution, however. If you want to just experience the feeling of being on one of those tempting gondolas, just hunt out for a traghetto, which cost €2 and have two oarsmen instead of one on a gondola. They are slightly bigger than gondolas, but extremely elusive and hard to find due to the extreme popularity of the gondola. But why would a traghetto be so cheap compared to a gondola? Well, there is a simple answer: the traghetto only takes you from one side of the canal to the other but the gondola takes you straight through the whole canal. Surprised? Unsatisfied? Weel, you can always take the water taxi, or like we did, just simply walk part of the Grand Canal's length. However, there are sights to be seen along the Grand Canal itself. Visit the famous pearl-white (well, now it has hints of wear) Rialto Bridge, which arguably has the best view of the Grand Canal. Also, it is an a must to dine on Italian food along the canal.
Time to spend: 30 minutes to 2 hours, depends on what you do. Bottom line: Going on a gondola isn't a must, unless you absolutely need to or are staying for a long time. Also, don't shop here, go to the side streets to stock up on souvenirs.
