Yesterday my family and I took a pilgrimage to the Mecca of Hinduism, the Venkateswara Temple in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. I was quite tired by the time we came back, and coudn't gather the strength to write this, and here's why.
We embarked on 3-hour car drive from central Chennai to rural Andhra Pradesh (for those of you who don't know where Andhra Pradesh is, Hyderabad is located there) I had mixed emotions, but the positive ones outweighed the negative feelings. I knew it would be crowded, but I'd never been anywhere as robustly religious, and I was curious about how it was. The drive was fine, a bit nauseous at times, but the Merinda (Indian equivalent of Fanta) helped. We arrived, our grey Maruti among the flood of honking cars in the tuoultuous streets surrounding the temple. We walked about a kilometer to the entrance. We had already paid our 500 From there it was waiting. And then passports. More waiting. You get the memo. The waiting wasn't so bad at first. Until we entered the cage.
